LCV Cities Tour - Savannah: Bonaventure Cemetery

Deep in the Southern United States, there lies a cemetery that has entranced its visitors for almost 250 years. A former colonial plantation plot in Savannah, Georgia, the Bonaventure Cemetery is a unique gem of history and haunted tales. From the Holocaust Memorial to the mass graves of Confederate soldiers, there are few cemeteries in America that encompass such a wide-range of historical and cultural landmarks.

In 1994, John Berendt wrote his New York Time's Best selling Novel, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'. The novel took place in Savannah, Georgia and the garden it referred to was none other than Bonaventure Cemetery. This catapulted Bonaventure Cemetery's popularity  with the larger American public, and made it a must-see tourist destination in Georgia.

During your visit, be sure to check out Bonaventure Cemetery's most popular areas. In the Jewish section of the cemetery, lies a Holocaust Memorial which contains a third of the ashes of 344 Nazi Concentration Camp victims. Among them is the father of a Savannah resident, who had arranged for the ashes to be brought to America from Germany. There are also multiple mass graves at the cemetery, buried over several plots of land. Most notable are those of Confederate soldiers who died in the area during The Civil War, remains of veterans of World War I and World War II, and the grave of veterans from the Spanish-American War which is the second largest in America.

The Bonaventure Cemetery has a visitor's center on the grounds with a gift shop and staff who can help point visitors to the most famous landmarks. On weekends, the cemetery offers guided walking tours by knowledgeable volunteers that last between 2-3 hours. The Bonaventure Cemetery is a hauntingly beautiful landmark and a gentle reminder to visitors of America's tumultuous past.
